Knoxville families are already feeling the strain of rising costs for groceries, gas, and housing. A sales tax increase would hit low- and middle-income residents the hardest — the very people who spend most of their income on essentials. Unlike income taxes, sales taxes don’t adjust based on ability to pay. This proposal would make everyday items more expensive for those least able to afford it.
Before raising taxes, government should demonstrate it can manage existing funds responsibly. 5 years ago the budget was $336 Million, and this years budget is $477 Million. In 5 short years the city has brought in an additional $141 Million per year. Clearly City of Knoxville Leadership has shown they are not good stewards.
Now is not the time to raise taxes. Knoxville residents are dealing with rising property assessments, soaring rents, and inflation at the grocery store. 3 years ago the city raised property taxes. A sales tax hike would push more families to the breaking point — especially retirees and those on fixed incomes. The city should focus on smart budgeting, not squeezing more out of working people.
